Common Terminology
Here are some terms that you might encounter in our clinic or as you are researching acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment.
Acupuncture – practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points especially to cure disease or relieve pain.
Acupuncture technique – process of manipulating acupuncture needles to initiate appropriate healing response.
Acupuncture point formulation – selecting acupuncture points based on a specific diagnosis.
Chinese Medicine – synonymous with Oriental Medicine (see Oriental Medicine).
Cupping - process of attaching a glass “cup” to the skin through negative pressure; many applications, generally used to treat musculature issues.
Herbal Medicine – process of using plant parts (primarily), animal parts (rarely), and minerals together to treat specific pain or disease processes.
Oriental Medicine – system of traditional Chinese medical concepts (acupuncture, herbal medicine, physiology, pathology, diagnostics, point location and point energetics).
