Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a several thousand year old medical practice. From a western perspective, it is believed that acupuncture works by stimulating the central nervous system and from the eastern perspective it works by restoring balance.
Acupuncture is the process of inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body to promote health and restore natural body function. It is part of the traditional Chinese system of medicine, which understands that perfect health is only achieved when our body systems all work together in perfect harmony.
Acupuncture focuses on restoring the natural balance of our body that is often disrupted as a result of stress, trauma, unhealthy lifestyle/diet and illness.
When acupuncture is used to restore this natural balance within our body the result is improved health, less pain, less fatigue, less hot flashes, less, less, less of improper body function!!
Acupuncture theory also recognizes a connection between the mind and body. This connection is an essential part of good health.
A properly trained acupuncturist understands that body systems and organs are interdependent, which means if there is an imbalance in one part of the system it will affect the other body systems. The mind-body relationship is one of these systems and it is easily realized when we acknowledge the fact that emotional and physical stress affect the overall health of our body.
Acupuncture helps to balance body systems and promote a healthy mind-body connection. A well trained acupuncturist will be able to identify the imbalances within your body that are causing your health concerns.
Once the imbalances are identified, acupuncture points that are specific to your condition will be used to restore balance within your body. From the Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, this is restoring health.
Treatment
The first thing I will do is an exam that consists of many detailed questions about your health. This will help me determine exactly how your body is functioning based on the eastern medical philosophy.
The information this provides me will allow for a detailed treatment plan that is specific to your health condition. Along with acupuncture the treatment may include one or more healing modalities such as herbal medicine, cupping or tui na.
After the treatment plan has been developed you will lay down on the treatment table and you will be treated with acupuncture, cupping or tui na.
In many cases herbal formulas are a very important part of the treatment as well. If you are prescribed a formula, you will take it home with you and use it as directed until your next appointment.
Many people find the treatments to be very relaxing and feel a sense of general well being when the treatment is completed. And many people who are afraid of needles are pleasantly surprised to find that it’s not painful and commonly say “that’s it, that wasn’t bad at all!”.
Treatments are gernerally 45 minutes from start to finish depending on your health condition, but can be done in 30 minutes if necessary.
