Acupuncture is the process of inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body to promote health and restore natural body function. It is part of the traditional Chinese system of medicine, which is a holistic system that understands there is a natural flow of energy within our body.
This energy travels through our body in specific pathways called channels or meridians. Sometimes this natural flow is disrupted as a result of stress, trauma, unhealthy lifestyle/diet, or an illness that has weakened the body. The result is usually pain or some other disease process.
Acupuncture is used to restore this natural flow of energy within our body. The result is improved health or less pain.
Chinese medicine also recognizes that there is a connection between mind and body and it is an essential part of good health. In Chinese medicine body systems and organs are seen as interdependent, which means if there is an imbalance in one part of the system it will affect the other body systems. The mind-body relationship is easily understood when we acknowledge that emotional and physical stress affects the overall health of our body.
Acupuncture helps to balance the body systems and promote a healthy mind-body connection. A well trained acupuncturist will ask the proper questions to understand where any imbalances and disruptions are within your body. With this understanding the practitioner will be able to formulate the proper acupuncture treatment specific to you and will apply the proper needling techniques to promote the most effective healing response.
